Control Resources offers new technical article on
I2C Communication for Fan Speed Control in Telecom Cooling Applications
|
Nate Lavoie, CRI's VP of Engineering has developed more than fifty I2C based fan speed controls for telecom cooling applications. The I2C bus is generally considered the standard format for management communication within the telecom chassis. Nate offers his technical article as an aid to design engineers responsible for telecom cooling systems. The article provides an overview of the advantages of using the I2C bus and discusses three main elements of the I2C specification that are essential to ensure a stable and error free system: Open Collector Consideration, Clock Stretching and Error Detection.
Also provided is a link to "The I2C-bus and how to use it" from Philips Semiconductor (now NXP). The document is considered to be the best source of information for proper I2C-bus implementation. The article also includes a sample I2C flow protocol diagram and I2C protocol specification from CRI's SmartFan Fusion Fan Speed Control and Alarm. SmartFan Fusion is an off-the-shelf fan speed control and alarm design specifically for telecom cooling applications.

SmartFan Nimbus-HP is a compact, TRIAC based fan, pump and motor control designed for
OEM applications in the HVAC, electronics and industrial controls markets. This microprocessor based control is ideal for applications including environmental control (temperature, humidity, pressure, flow), clean room pressurization, equipment cooling, exhaust ventilation and heating/air conditioning systems. Nimbus-HP is designed to control induction motors (shaded pole or permanent split capacitor) that have been approved for voltage control by the motor manufacturer.
On-board programming allows the setting of many parameters providing maximum flexibility. Nimbus-HP operates from an 85 to 300 VAC single-phase power source. Output power rating is 18 Amps. Motor speed can be based on an analog control signal (4-20mA, 2-10VDC) or temperature at up to three remote sensors. Nimbus-HP is RoHS compliant and is available open frame or with a steel cover. Special and custom configurations are available. From $73.30 – available now.
Benefits of using SmartFan include acoustical noise reduction, greater product reliability, increased fan life, improved safety, energy savings and regulation of temperature, pressure, humidity or flow. |
