SmartFan® Stratus-II |
|
- SmartFan Stratus has been very successful in the OEM marketplace since product introduction in 2006. In response to customer feedback and internal VFD design innovations, CRI will release our SmartFan Stratus II variable frequency drive in January 2010.
SmartFan Stratus II is a microprocessor based variable frequency drive designed for OEM applications in HVAC, electronic and industrial control markets. Stratus II is designed to control single and three-phase fans, motors and pumps in AC motor speed control applications including environmental control (temperature, humidity, pressure, flow), clean room pressurization, equipment cooling, exhaust ventilation and heating/air conditioning systems.
Design enhancements incorporated into the SmartFan Stratus II include:
- UL Recognition
- Increased capacitance for hi-torque applications
- Allows analog control and Modbus functionality at the same time
- Improved response time (control signal input – output regulation)
- Improved control from potentiometer input
- USB interface
On-board programming allows easy set-up for motor control based on an analog control input. For added versatility, Stratus II can be programmed and controlled using ModBus or USB interfaces. The ease of operation, small size and innovative microprocessor design make Stratus II the most cost effective variable frequency drive available for low power AC motor speed control.

- Nate Lavoie, CRI's VP of Engineering has developed more than fifty I2C based fan speed controls for telecom cooling applications. The I2C bus is generally considered the standard format for management communication within the telecom chassis. Nate offers this technical article as an aid to design engineers responsible for telecom cooling systems. The article provides an overview of the advantages of using the I2C bus and discusses three main elements of the I2C specification that are essential to ensure a stable and error free system: Open Collector Consideration, Clock Stretching and Error Detection.
Also provided is a link to “The I2C-bus and how to use it” from Philips Semiconductor (now NXP). This document is considered to be the best source of information for proper I2C-Bus implementation. The article also includes a sample I2C flow protocol diagram and I2C protocol specification from CRI's SmartFan Fusion Fan Speed Control and Alarm. SmartFan Fusion is an off-the-shelf fan speed control and alarm design specifically for telecom cooling applications.

LabStrobeTM LED Stroboscope from CRI |
New economical strobe, only $219, for measuring speed of rotation or frequency of vibration |
Control Resources is pleased to announce the addition of LabStrobe to our test equipment product line. The LabStrobe stroboscope is used to measure the speed of rotation or frequency of vibration of a fan, motor, or other mechanical part or system. Stroboscopes have the advantage of not loading or disturbing the equipment under test. Mechanical equipment may be observed under actual operating conditions. Parasitic oscillations, flaws, and unwanted distortion at high speeds are readily detected. The latest in PHILIPS LUMILED technology provides this pocket sized strobe with unparallel brightness and battery life at this price point.
LabStrobe LED Stroboscope features/specifications:
- Pocket sized enclosure (4.94" x 2.88" x 1.28")
- Microprocessor controlled
- Battery (2 AA) powered for portability
- Low battery indicator
- Advantages of LED technology over older Xenon lamps:
- No costly lamp to replace
- No heat generation
- Ultra high efficiency for longer run time
- Fast response rate
- Immune to mechanical shock and vibration
- Five digit digital flash rate display
- 30 - 20,000 pulses per minute range
- Six button membrane for easy operation
- Flash rate adjustment (4 buttons):
- Coarse: Multiply by 2, Divide by 2
- Fine: Up, Down with incremental speed adjustment
- Flash phase adjustment (2 buttons):
- Up, Down with incremental speed adjustment with 1° resolution
- RoHS compliant
- Hand-held and tripod mountable (tripod ordered separately)
- Operating temperature: 14° to 104° F (-10° to 40°C)
