Telecom Cooling Design using 24V 4-Wire fans.
The challenge of this telecom cooling application was to provide advanced features required by the customer into a small circuit board area. The unusual shape of the PCB was designed to "wrap" around six fans, allowing more area for fan speed control circuitry. This multi layer board has parts on both side and uses fine pitch SMT components. The success of this innovative fan speed control design resulted in it being used in three telecom cooling platforms by the customer.

-36 to -72 VDC
- Fans: Six 24
VDC, 1.5A, 4-wire fans
- Dual "buck" regulators. Fan current is 5A per regulator at 55°C
- Fan speed
control based on I2C communications

Provides fan status based on monitoring fan tach pulses

Optically isolated logic alarm outputs for single and multiple fan
failure

I2C bus transmits circuit board inventory and temperature
information
- Both
power feeds and individual fans are fused

All input and output lines have EMI suppression
- Active current limiting is provided for normal operation, startup, hotplug and fault
conditions
