Custom Fan Tray Design and Manufacturing - Fan Tray Redesign Example
Control Resources had been providing a special SmartFan TachScan-9 fan alarm used in a fan tray designed by a large telecom OEM. The customer began encountering a problem with some international installations. In some countries, the supply voltage was spiking and damaging the 24 VDC fans used in the fan tray. CRI visited the customer and offered to develop a custom version of the TachScan-9 that would regulate the voltage to the fans to eliminate the potential for damage. The customer had been considering adding a voltage regulator brick to the fan tray.
CRI's solution was dramatically less expensive and no mechanical changes by the customer were needed. After further discussion, CRI offered to provide a free evaluation of the fan tray and the customer accepted. The result was a cleaner, easier to assemble fan tray design with the voltage regulator circuit added. The pricing for the revised fan tray was about 20% below the customer's cost target. With minimal effort for the customer, CRI evaluated the design, proposed and implemented improvements and is now producing the complete fan tray for the customer. A Win-Win solution for both the customer OEM and CRI.
